Chapter Thirteen

ONDREJ had forgotten that his old boss Amy was a vegetarian, so he was somewhat surprised to see that the restaurant she’d picked had no meat dishes on the menu.

As he thought about what to eat, Amy said, “So how are things going with Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome?”

He nearly laughed. “We have an interview with an immigration agent tomorrow so she can properly investigate my green card application.”

Amy guffawed. “You sound like you’re joking. Are you joking?”

“Everyone assures me that my odds of actually getting deported are pretty slim, but no, I’m not joking. An actual agent is coming to the house tomorrow to interview me and Archie to verify that we’re actually in love, just like on TV.”

“Wow. I didn’t think that happened in the real world.”

“Normally, it doesn’t.” Ondrej explained what he’d heard about how CIS processed green card applications and his theory about timing and Archie’s high profile. “I mean, based on what I’ve read online, they would interview everyone if they had the resources, but apparently they only make the effort if you have a suspicious-seeming high-profile marriage with a lot of money involved.”

“Ah,” said Amy. “But you kind of knew this was a possibility. Hence all the public appearances and schmoopyness in interviews.”

“Interviews? What interviews?”

Amy’s eyes went wide. “Did you not see the cover story in this month’s Fast Company? Your husband is one of the leading LGBT CEOs in the country, according to the story. When they interviewed him, he gushed about you all over the page. I’m surprised he didn’t show you.”

“Really? No, I didn’t see it.” Archie? Gushing about Ondrej? That seemed out of character. Unless he was acting again. “Guess I’ll have to track down a copy.”

“It was cute,” Amy said. “There’s lots of tittering among the ladies in accounts payable too, about how adorable a couple you two make. Some think he’s even calmed down since he got married, that he yells less and seems less angry. They credit your influence. There’s been some speculation about what happens when you close yourselves into his office.”

“Mostly we go over the company’s finances.”

Amy laughed. “That’s the least sexy thing I ever heard.”

Ondrej debated whether to tell Amy—who had become his friend, even before he stopped working for her—about the fact that he and Archie were now sleeping together most nights. He ruled against it; he still wasn’t sure what to make of his relationship with Archie.

After they ordered food, Amy said, “This relationship is actually a good thing for the company, believe it or not.”

“What do you mean?”

Amy looked around. They were still within a few blocks of the Katsaros offices, so there might have been employees within hearing distance. She lowered her head and said softly, “Cone of silence, okay?” She gestured with her hands, miming a cone around them.

“Of course.”

“The news media always had nice things to say about Alexander Katsaros. He was charming and handsome and everything you wanted as the public face of a company. But he was also kind of a dick.
